Another Snow Day!

howard

Outside my kitchen window. This is Howard, our resident woodpecker. He & Beth his wife don’t mind my camera at the kitchen sink. But our bigger set of woodpeckers, Fred & Ginger are easily spooked.

Major snow day today. Love it. Until I have to drive tomorrow…

All white outside, but colour blooming on the canvas.

Waiting for Baby G…

My niece Mrs G is expecting her first baby. Not to say she will have more — or not. Remember having a baby? You’re still walking funny and people are asking when you plan on having the second!! I am assuming her close mommy friends have already prepared her for the onslaught of unsolicited advice and backseat parenting she will receive when Baby G makes his or her appearance next week.

Anyways, we are waiting for the call, email or text. Bets have been made on the exact date of arrival. Also the very scientific needle & thread data tells us to expect a girl. We collected most of the data at a shower held a few weeks ago. I offered to make a diaper cake. I had made one for The Analyzer’s baby shower and wanted to take it on again. And yes, the first one had turned out completely awesome, so I wanted to experience some more awesome.

Of course I had forgotten the details — how many diapers were needed, which size and style (the plainer the better), so I accosted grocery store customers down the diaper aisle — they had babies with them, so I figured they should have the scoop on the latest & greatest. Most weary parents were very nice and helpful, others tried to politely squirm away.

I was happy to learn that Baby G’s room colours are grey & yellow — yes!!

You may not be able to tell from the photo, but the cake is sitting on a cake stand.  So when they have used up the 96 newborn diapers, they can make a cake. And to accompany that cake — the bottle of merlot hidden inside!

Next, I knew I wanted to try creating something for Baby G’s room. Using the new line of paper called Carolina Breeze by Teresa Collins  as my base, the following 6×6 pieces evolved.

I was pretty happy with the result. I don’t know where these canvases will be hung, but in my mind they are right above the change table, where Mr & Mrs G have the chance to look at different parts of the canvases a little bit at a time, over their countless trips to change diapers. I can hardly wait!

Next, I am taking on bunny making!

Fall is Show Time!

It’s that time of the year, craft shows, conferences, exhibitions — I want to take part in  everything!!! Alas, there is only one of me….

Friday, October 12 to Saturday October 13, I will be with Pointer Gifts & Crafts at SCRAPFEST in Oshawa. I will be doing make’n takes Friday from 5-7:30pm, and Saturday from 1-3:30pm, and of course, shopping.

I am very proud to announce I was selected to be a participating artisan at the beyondCraft Show & Sale, November 8 – 11, 2012, located at the Latcham Gallery in Stouffville, Ontario. I will be displaying my jewellery, custom cards & mixed-media canvases.

I will be teaching  mixed-media canvass classes at Pointer on October 18 & 25 from 5 – 8pm. In November, I will also be teaching this class at the Georgina Art Centre & Gallery. When the date is finalized, I will post it.

My next post will showcase the jewellery I have been inspired to make. A teaser to leave you with – think, turquoise, copper, silver, leather…

I’m in Canadian Scrapbooker!

It arrived in the mail in a plastic protector. It sat face-down in a pile on the counter, amidst flyers for furnace cleaning and fast food coupons. When I finally began to sort through the mountain of to-be recycling, I squealed. My kids came running — “another bear?!” [That’s another story for another day.]

We stood at the counter, everyone leaning in to get a good look, as I slowly turned the pages of the FALL 2012 CANADIAN SCRAPBOOKER.

My initial excitement began to allow self-doubt to creep in. Turn slowly, it may be so small a picture we might miss it, I thought. I knew Miss Know-It-All was mind-reading because she caught my eye with a sympathetic look. The more pages I turned, the more anxious I became. Then BINGO, page 109 and my canvas took up the WHOLE PAGE!

We admired the page, there was a round of hugs given, and then everyone went back to their day. Me too, except with a huge perma-grin on my face!

I will be teaching mixed-media canvas in September at Pointer. Hope to see you there!

Fifty (year old) Shades of Grey

My eyes flutter open and I see my Fifty laying there beside me in bed. I decide that it is time to wake him up! As I reach to pull the pillow out from between my legs — I need it for back support, I feel a sneeze building up. My allergies are in full swing, and before I can brace myself, I sneeze and my mouth guard pops out of my mouth and flies across the bed and hits my man in the back of the head. Oh my.

Now that I’ve got your attention…

I am very happy to announce that my mixed-media canvases and cards are now available at the Georgina Art Centre & Gallery. It is a wonderful gallery located in Sutton and I am very proud to be a member and participating artist.

I recently SMASH-ed our family trip to Paris and completely loved being able to do it as we went. I  documented & collected ephemera (everything from METRO tickets to baguette bags) so by the time I got home and had photos developed, I could stick the INSTAGRAMS and quirky pictures in the places I had stories waiting for the visual. Then I could find the really good 1 or 2 to enlarge & scrapbook or hang. But I still feel the need to …PLAY.

I have decided to try my hand at art journalling. I have been a scrapbooker now for 9 years and as I have ventured into mixed-media, I feel the urge to express myself in more mediums that traditional scrapbooking allows. My first-born-Virgo anal-ness is suddenly being attacked by a dirty-handed hippie. My need for clean straight lines and organized paper and photos is having to fight with my urge to gesso & spray. I’m worried though, because I am not an “artist”. I am not trained — I did take a fine arts university course on colour theory a million years ago when I was in school, but that is all. I am a terrible doodler — hence I have taken up & love Zentangle. But I have always tried & failed at keeping a diary/journal, so this is my attempt.

So here is my first art journal page. Yes, it was back in April, but I was not ready to commit. Julie Fei Fan Balzer is my total inspiration on this journey. Let me know what you think.
